The New York Industrial Retention Network ( NYIRN) seeks a Summer Policy Associate. This is a summer position and would be ideal for a current graduate student.

Responsibilities

The Summer Policy Associate will report to the Deputy Director and will take a leadership role on several projects. Responsibilities include:

  • Help coordinate citywide “Zoning For Jobs” campaign (www.zoningforjobs.org) to raise awareness of the important role blue-collar jobs play in the City’s economy and to advocate for a set of new zoning and finance tools that will help support and grow industrial jobs;
  • Provide technical assistance to community groups seeking to preserve and grow local employment opportunities in the industrial sector;
  • Support local businesses in areas that are experiencing real estate pressure and displacement of industrial jobs;
  • Conduct primary research (interviews, site visits, data analysis, surveys) on the local manufacturing sector and on policies impacting job retention for use in NYIRN proposals, reports, articles and presentations;
  • Assist in the formulation of NYIRN energy, sustainability and land use policy proposals;
  • Support NYIRN staff through GIS mapping and analysis of economic statistics.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is well-organized, creative, has a sense of humor and meets the following qualifications:

  • At least one to two years of work experience in government, economic development, planning, public policy or related field, or working towards a graduate degree in Urban Planning, Public Policy/Administration, or a related field;
  • Familiarity with New York City neighborhoods and local government;
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping software, Excel and Powerpoint;
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills, including ability to tailor communications for various constituencies;
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to think critically and strategically about complex urban issues;
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects at once and respond quickly to changing priorities.

This position may require traveling around NYC to attend meetings & events, make presentations, etc. Some evenings and early mornings are to be expected. This is a full-time position that would run May to August, with the possibility of being extended into a permanent position after the summer. The rate is $15 per hour for 28 to 35 hours of work per week.
