Our goal
this year: $25,000
Amount
raised so far: $7,175
Since 1997, NYIRN has worked with more than 2,200 New
York manufacturers employing 93,000 people. In many instances, NYIRN’s
help was crucial to keeping those companies and jobs in New York City.
NYIRN’s policy work has been the catalyst for virtually
every major industrial initiative over the last ten years and gained
greater public recognition for the importance of blue collar jobs in
both the City’s overall economy and in local neighborhoods - such
as Sunset Park, East Williamsburg, Maspeth and Hunts Point.
Some of NYIRN’s major milestones over the last 10 years include:
- Creation of the $8 million Printers Relocation Fund;
- Publication of The Garment Center – Still In Fashion;
- Launch of the Food From New York initiative for the city’s 900+ food manufacturers;
- Creating the Made In NYC business-to-business directory at www.madeinnyc.org, profiling 750+ local manufacturers.
- Creation of the Mayor’s Office of Industrial and Manufacturing Businesses and the Industrial Business Zones program;
- Publication of a study of the Illegal Building Conversions In East Williamsburg, which led to better zoning enforcement and protection of industrial space;
- Commitment of $20 million to preserve industrial space in Greenpoint and Williamsburg and creation of the North Brooklyn Energy Grant program; and
- Publication of Building Green and Manufacturing Green and launch of the Green Manufacturing Initiative.
Highlights of NYIRN’s work in 2007 include:
- Business assistance to 184 companies employing 7,000 New Yorkers.
- A new green search feature added to Made in NYC to help buyers identify local green products.
- The launch of Spec It Green, which has brought wide exposure to manufacturers of green building materials. In its first year, Spec It Green has generated $1.25 million of new business for NYC manufacturers.
- Just Another Link in the Food Chain, a study identifying the growing subsectors in NYC’s food industry.
- Passage of Local Law 37 of 2007, increasing fines for illegal conversions of industrial space to residential.
- RenewableNY helped 29 manufacturers develop and implement energy conservation strategies to reduce energy demand and costs.
None of these achievements would have happened without NYIRN’s strong partnerships with labor organizations, community groups, economic and environmental organizations, and government agencies, all guided by a commitment to economic and environmental justice and sustainable development.
On
behalf of NYIRN’s Board
of Directors and staff, we thank you for your support.
